How can big amounts of data be used to solve global and social challenges?
The lecture “Making Discoveries for Humanity and Society with Data Science” gives an introduction to the world of data science.
The Science Circle is organized by the German Embassy in Seoul, ADeKo (The Alumni Network Germany-Korea), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Goethe-Institute Seoul with the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It offers scientists who are doing research in Germany or have a connection to Germany a platform to discuss current issues.
This event marks the 55th Science Circle and is the first one after a long break due to Corona.
Data Science – in this interdisciplinary science, algorithms, various methods, and systems are used to gain insights and knowledge from large amounts of data. Thanks to artificial intelligence and mathematic methods these growing amounts of data can be processed.
Two examples – the mapping of poverty and the detection of fake news – are used to emphasize the social and global relevance of data science in the context of computational social sciences.
As you can see in the program below, Meeyoung Cha will share some of her experiences working as a data scientist. Among other things, she talks about her collaboration with renowned scientists at Facebook, the Max-Planck-Institute, and the United Nations Pulse Lab.
Meeyoung Cha is a teaching professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and is the Scientific Director of the Max-Planck-Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP). Her field of interest and research lies in the social scientific use of data science and human-machine interaction. Her publications on fake news, poverty mapping, and fraud detection have been widely cited and earned her a high profile. Moreover, she has received several awards for her work, including the Korean Young Information Scientist Award and the ACM IMC Test-of-Time Award.
