[Society] Male parental leave reaches record high

As of November 2024, a record 30% of people taking parental leave were men, reflecting a 20% increase from the previous year. The number of male workers on parental leave in the private sector reached 39,463 between January and November, with the total likely surpassing 40,000 when December's data is included. This growth is attributed to improved systems supporting work-family balance, such as a program introduced in January 2024 that provides full salary for six months if both parents take leave simultaneously. This initiative has contributed to a significant rise in parental leave recipients. The government sees increasing male participation in childcare as crucial to addressing the country’s low birthrate. Further plans include increasing parental leave benefits and extending paternity leave to 20 days.
